Blonde: Marilyn Monroe Estate applauds Ana de Armas amid backlash

The Marilyn Monroe Estate is backing the Cuban actress following complaints that she doesn’t look like the screen icon in the latest trailer.

Ana de Armas’ Cuban accent has been at the center of controversy surrounding her casting as Marilyn Monroe for Andrew Dominik’s “Blonde.”

Based on Joyce Carol Oates’ fictional account of Monroe’s life in a novel of the same name, the film stars de Armas as the titular blonde bombshell who rose to fame as a comedic actress, singer and sex act. -symbol before his untimely death at age 36. Following the release of the trailer for the NC-17-rated Netflix film, released on September 28, questions arose about de Armas’ breath taking on Monroe’s voice. Now the official estate of Marilyn Monroe stands tall throwing de Armas into the unauthorized representation.

“Marilyn Monroe is a singular Hollywood and pop culture icon who transcends generations and history,” Marc Rosen, president of entertainment at Authentic Brands Group (ABG), owner of the Marilyn Monroe Estate, told Variety. “Any actor who steps into this role knows they have big shoes to fill. Based on the trailer alone, it looks like Ana was a great casting choice as she captures the glamour, humanity and vulnerability by Marilyn. We can’t wait to see the film in its entirety!

Of note, “Blonde” was not made in cooperation with Monroe’s estate, as it is a fictional portrayal and not a biopic of the late star.

Director Dominik cast de Armas after nearly a decade of trying to land the lead role. Jessica Chastain and Naomi Watts were reportedly attached to the film, which has been in development since 2010. De Armas landed the role in 2019. Adrien Brody, Bobby Cannavale and Julianne Nicholson also starred as real-life characters in Monroe’s life.

Dominik previously explained that he knew Cuban actress de Armas was “the one” to play Monroe after just one audition. De Armas later told Vanity Fair that the opportunity to face the legendary star was a career chore.

“I knew I could do it. Playing Marilyn was revolutionary, a Cuban playing Marilyn Monroe,” de Armas said in 2020. “I wanted it so badly. You see that famous photo of her and she’s smiling right now, but that’s only part of what she was really going through back then.

De Armas’ “Knives Out” co-star Jamie Lee Curtis, whose father Tony Curtis starred opposite Monroe in “Some Like It Hot,” praised de Armas’ portrayal, saying, ” I fell on the floor. I couldn’t believe it. Ana was completely gone. She has been Marilyn.

De Armas trained for nine months with a dialect coach to perfect Monroe’s signature voice. “It was great torture, so exhausting,” added de Armas. “My brain was fried.”

Writer-director Dominik also called Armas “fuckin’ amazing” as Monroe, telling Screen Daily, “The one thing nobody’s gonna complain about is [de Armas’] performance.”
