Brandon Moreno finishes Kai Kara-France with a kick to the body

Brandon Moreno is next. He left no doubt about this Saturday at UFC 277.

In the co-main event at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Moreno (20-6-2 MMA, 8-3-2 UFC) finished Kai Kara-France (24-10 MMA, 7-3 UFC) with a body kick and punches at the 4:33 mark of Round 3.

The first two rounds were closely contested, with Moreno using his range and striking technique well. Kara-France struggled to muster a cohesive attack until the start of the third round. Kara-France found some success in a streak in which Moreno shot for a leg but failed.

Winding and weaving like a top-notch Benson Henderson on the floor, Moreno encountered a few handfuls of Kara-France knuckles, who were standing above him. The gunshots bloodied Moreno, who eventually got up and continued to fight.

As the clock ticked down, Moreno landed a nasty left kick into Kara-France’s midsection. There were no heads in poker. Kara-France bent like a garden chair and squeezed her abdomen. Halfway between taking care of the soft zone and defending the onslaught of punches to the head, Kara-France was unable to defend herself and referee Herb Dean intervened.

With an interim title in his possession, Moreno has lined up to fight recovering champion Deiveson Figueiredo (21-2-1 MMA, 10-2-1 UFC) in the future. This will be the fourth face-to-face of their career. The series is even at 1-1-1.

After the fight, Figueiredo joined Moreno inside the cage. Despite Figueiredo’s nasty attacks, Moreno said he wanted to be an example for his wife and children. So he apologized to Figueirdo for offending him in the past and extended his hand. Figueiredo accepted the apology and the two hugged as they gathered the crowd.

With the win, Moreno rebounded from a title loss to Figueiredo at UFC 270 in January. He also won an interim title for the first time. Since joining the UFC in 2019, Moreno has compiled a 5-1-2 record with wins over Figueiredo, Jussier Formiga, Brandon Royval and two over Kara-France.

Moreno and Kara-France first faced off at UFC 245 in December 2019. Moreno won via unanimous decision.
